The relationship between ferritin and hemosiderin in rabbits and man.

چکیده
Iron is stored in tissues as ferritin and hemosiderin. These compounds are increased in a state of iron excess and become depleted with iron deficiency (2). Both may be considered to represent iron reserves which may be mobilized when needed. The functional relationship between these two compounds has been a matter of speculation. It has been suggested that the ferritin fraction represents more “labile” iron reserves; it has been suggested also that ferritin and hemosiderin are different physical forms of the same ironprotein complex (3). The present studies are an attempt to clarify the relationship of these compounds in animals and man.

Although hemosiderosis develops in many circumstances (1) in man and animals, and though hemosiderin has long been recognized as an important product of iron metabolism, the formation and structure of hemosiderin in tissues have not as yet been elucidated at fine structure levels. In recent years numerous studies have indicated a close chemical relationship between the iron storage compound fer...
متن کاملTransformation rate between ferritin and hemosiderin assayed by serum ferritin kinetics in patients with normal iron stores and iron overload
Ferritin iron, hemosiderin iron, total iron stores and transformation rate were determined by serum ferritin kinetics. The transformation rate between ferritin and hemosiderin is motivated by the potential difference between them. The transformer determines transformation rate according to the potential difference in iron mobilization and deposition. The correlations between transformation rate...
متن کاملMR Iron Quantification of Soluble (Ferritin-like) and Insoluble (Hemosiderin-like) Iron: A Biochemical Validation in Human Liver Explants
Introduction: A theoretical MR model has been proposed that separately quantifies dispersed (soluble, ferritin-like) and aggregated (insoluble, hemosiderin-like) iron by distinguishing their effects on R2 relaxation curves. Recently, this model has been validated in agarose phantoms using MnCl2 and iron oxide microspheres to mimic ferritin and hemosiderin iron, respectively. Here, we directly m...
متن کاملIncreasing and Decreasing Phases of Ferritin and Hemosiderin Iron Determined by Serum Ferritin Kinetics
We attempted to clarify the mechanism of the storage iron metabolism. A new program of serum ferritin kinetics was applied for studying the increasing and decreasing phases of ferritin and hemosiderin iron in iron addition and removal in patients with a normal level of iron stores or iron overload. The change of ferritin iron in response to iron addition and removal was rapid in the initial sta...
متن کاملA Quantitative Fractionation of Tissue Ferritin and Hemosiderin*
Ferritin and hemosiderin are two forms of storage iron of strikingly similar chemical and physical characteristics (1). Ferritin is present in dispersed form. within the cell, while hemosiderin is present as insoluble particles which are visible microscopically. The separation of these subst.ances has not been heretofore performed on a quantitative scale, although methods for the extraction of ...
